Data Loss Prevention

The last few years have seen the issue of Data Loss creeping steadily up the list of priorities. For some organisations this shift has been driven by compliance, for others it is protecting the company brand, reputation or competitive advantage. Either way, the high profile reports of data loss in the news, along with the sizeable fines being handed out as a result, have been forcing organisations of all shapes and sizes to review their approach.
Preventing sensitive data from theft and malicious or accidental loss can be problematic for a number of reasons. Firstly, data is increasingly becoming mobile as the use of laptops, smart phones and USBs continue to grow. Secondly, organisations increasingly want to move data from one location to another either as individuals travel around or because of increasing collaboration between distributed user locations. Finally, the risk of losing data is often greatly exacerbated by a lack of awareness, and sometimes even a lack of willingness to adhere to guidelines, from the end users. As safe usage policies are bypassed or ignored, sensitive company data becomes vulnerable to exposure.
Having an effective Data Loss Prevention (DLP) strategy and infrastructure in place will enable companies to keep sensitive information under wraps, but without limiting the end users’ ability to carry out their roles.
