GDPR quiz

Question 1

Industry regulation and compliance are important but are they the main reasons organisations have today for implementing DLP? Choose the top reason:

Question 1

Wrong!

Protecting data generally comes out top. But these are all major reasons for having DLP, in the same order they’re displayed here, according to the 2016 Ponemon Data Protection Benchmark Study.

Question 2

A subject requests that inaccurate/incomplete data be rectified. How long do you have to comply?

Question 2

Wrong!

No, you have 1 month to comply.

Question 3

What proportion of organisations use DLP to monitor and block incidents from time of initial deployment?

Question 3

Wrong!

The 2016 Ponemon research showed only 55% turn on both straight away. A further 35% will have applied blocking sometime after initial deployment but another 10% still haven’t utilised it – and 1% have no plans to! The lesson here is that configuration is important. This isn’t just about having DLP installed but using it properly, to get maximum benefit.

Question 4

Most organisations give staff training about the safekeeping of data. But user notifications (eg ‘Are you sure you want to transfer this file to a removable drive?’) improve security. Out of those organisations that have DLP installed, what proportion employ user notifications?

Question 4

Wrong!

While the number is high, the 2016 Ponemon study shows over 90% of mature installations make use of automatic user notification versus 40% of early-stage deployments. And remember – not everyone has DLP installed or configured correctly. Again, security training, including user notifications, across an organisation is important and will complement proper DLP usage.

Question 5

What proportion of organisations are sharing the outputs from their DLP solution with their business leaders?

Question 5

Wrong!

Only a third take this next step, says the 2016 Ponemon study. We’ve seen so far that educating and training the wider workforce is important to prevent data loss. However, business leaders need to be kept informed with a view to addressing organisational issues around data collection, classification and business processes. Only then can there be strategic DLP improvements.
